The Week In Review - 06/27/2025
Where sports, business, and culture collide - Broken down by: Spotlights / Sports Business / Sports Media, Content & Streaming / Sports & Culture: Athletes, Brands, Partnerships, Style / International
Happy Friday - lots to unpack from the week, and honestly there was so much going on that I’m gonna save some of the content for Sunday.
From the PLL’s game-changing deal with ESPN to Travis Scott stepping in as Oakley’s Chief Visionary, the headlines were far and wide. Cooper Flagg went #1 and already has his own “Flagg day”. Max Kellerman is back in the boxing world - this time with Netflix. And WNBA’s valuations are 📈.
This Week’s 4 Spotlights
ESPN Renews Media Deal With Professional Lacrosse, Takes An Equity Stake In The League
Summary & Key Takeaway: ESPN has renewed its media-rights deal with the Premier Lacrosse League through 2031 and taken a minority equity stake. The deal includes coverage of all PLL events and the new Maybelline Women’s Lacrosse League. With lacrosse returning to the Olympics in 2028, ESPN is betting on the sport’s long-term growth and cultural momentum.
My Thoughts:
Having grown up on the East Coast, where Lacrosse has thrived for generations, I always had a front row seat to watch the highest level of the sport. I’ve never seen / played against more complete athletes than those who play this game. The toughest, quickest, strongest, and most conditioned youth athletes I came across were almost always lacrosse players. It always felt like they were multi-sport talents, who needed a spring sport that had more action & physicality than baseball - just think Chris Hogan, Pat Spencer, Jared Bernhardt, etc.
What Paul Rabil has built with the PLL is nothing short of masterful. He’s grown the game with intention and designed it for the modern fan - fast, bold, personality-driven, and made for streaming. ESPN’s decision to not only renew the media rights but also invest in the league signals a real belief in lacrosse as a growth driver for the network’s future.
Rabil talked to Puck’s John Ourand this week about the ESPN deal & the PLL’s future.Shane Gillis To Host 2025 ESPY Awards
Summary & Key Takeaway: Comedian Shane Gillis will host the 2025 ESPY Awards on July 16, marking the first time since 2021 the show features a non-athlete as host. His edgy humor and genuine sports fandom are expected to inject fresh energy, signaling ESPN’s push to revitalize the ceremony and connect with younger, entertainment-focused audiences.
My Thoughts:
Another super strategic decision for ESPN. They are clearly trying to attract a younger, more culturally engaged audience - and Shane Gillis is the guy right now.
He’s kind of like the Chalamet of comedy - he’s having a moment: every appearance lands, he never tries too hard, and he brings this mix of casual, self-deprecating charm that makes him hard to hate. Not everyone will be a fan, but the choice feels authentic and in touch with the times. Don’t be surprised if the ratings reflect that.GameStop Dipping Its Toe Into Trading Card, Collectibles Market
Summary & Key Takeaway: GameStop is leaning into trading cards and collectibles - with PSA grading now available at over 1,600 stores - driving a 55% jump in Q1 sales while its core business shrinks. The move could reignite in-store engagement, and with Fanatics rapidly scaling in the space, there is room to play.
My Thoughts:
The trading card and collectibles space is booming right now - Fanatics basically saved the whole industry the way Palmer Luckey did with VR. GameStop feels like it's finally re-connecting with its core community - back when I was young it was lining up for the new video game, now it’s trading and collecting. A Fanatics x GameStop partnership doesn’t feel like an if, it feels like a when.Travis Scott Is Oakley's First-Ever 'Chief Visionary'
Summary & Key Takeaway: Oakley has named Travis Scott its first-ever Chief Visionary, granting him and his Cactus Jack team creative control over product and brand direction in a multi-year partnership. The move mirrors a growing trend of heritage brands handing the reins to cultural icons as a way to stay relevant and drive deeper cultural engagement.
My Thoughts:
This is a trend I’m following closely - like how athletes have become investors, and media entrepreneurs in the modern era, musicians have continually crossed over into other artistic mediums as well. Guys like Jay-Z 🤝 Rocawear / Paper Planes, Ye (Kanye) 🤝 LV & Nike collabs, Yeezy, Kid Cudi 🤝 Members Of The Rage, Human Made collabs paved the path for —> Virgil & Pharrell 🤝 LV, A$AP Rocky 🤝 Ray-Ban, and now Travis 🤝 Oakley.

A 7-Step Playbook For Better NBA Finals TV Coverage

However, the arbitrator ruled that there was insufficient evidence of a formal collusive agreement among teams, so the NFLPA’s case was dismissed.
